The Gangs of White River Junction

One needs to be very careful what colors s/he wears when walking the streets of "El Rio Blanco." With numerous gangs on the prowl and a constant war for territory, if one's not cautious, they may find themselves in the middle of some crossfire.

Here's a bullet hole from one of the many battles.

Bubbles!

This pictures came from Tuesday's Swim Shoot. I'm not exactly sure who took it (it may have been Zoe, Kinsey or myself), however it's still an awesome example of a shot that doesn't involve any framing.

Colors that rhyme with "urple"

It's so nice to see a splashes of color in the most unexpected of places. Doors are rarely outside the black, white or earth-toned color scheme. So when I see a purple door, I generally get pretty excited. And I found out today that my friend Jill really likes doors (I'm still waiting on the story).

Pipes

This reminds me of that old school Windows screen saver.

Spiral Up

It's too easy to get caught in a vicious cycle that takes one increasingly closer to the end of a bottomless pit. But every so often, we can caught in a vortex that brings us in the opposite direction and allows us to spiral up, spinning closer and faster towards a seemingly non-existent event horizon.

Signs of Life

It's impossible not to love those cute little signs that when we see in stores we think to ourselves, "Who would ever buy that shit?" But then we see these things in the real world and they make us smile, chuckle and sometimes reminisce.

Motor Bikes!

As I dive deeper and deeper into this project, I realize it is quite literally boundless. While cruising through the back roads of Vermont, I secured the camera around my wrist and took many pictures while driving.

While most of the shots were nothing more than trees and road, a few came out quite nice. These motorists were victims of one of the most successful shots.

Rusty Pipes

While driving through Vermont, I came across a piece of property covered in old cars, trucks, appliances, you name it. The way this decrepit, rusty pipe lined up with the sunlight made for some awesome shots. Two of the highlights.

Mod Squad

I'm not sure if anyone else remembers the old school TV show Three. It aired on the WB and lasted only eight episodes. It was essentially three former convicts hired to work secret missions for an unnamed organization, a slightly more glamorized version of the Mod Squad.

While strolling the streets of Cambridge, I managed to take this shot (the best shot from an entire day of shooting). I feel there are some cosmopolitan mod squad overtones lingering in their somewhere that snuggle nicely next to the TV show from my childhood.

Who's the Best Friend in the Whole Wide World?

A short blog tribute to one of my bestest of friends, Elise Krieger. There is a song that goes along with this tribute, but you'll have to find Elise to have her sing it for you.

Hope

The walking self-portrait. Rarely in focus, always sexy.

Guest Photographer - Matt Chingos

I spent yesterday in Boston, MA spending time with my brother and avid blog reader Matt Chingos. Matt seemed to thinking the work of No Viewfinder would be ease to duplicate and reproduce. A short walk to the deli revealed that "The Art of the Accident" is a bit more of an art that he would like to admit.

Throughout the day, Matt grabbed the camera and snapped some shots (around 100 I would estimate). Here are highlights, none of them involving anyone going to the FBI.

My favorite and Matt's best shot of the day. I feel as if I'm being sucked into a storm by just looking at this photo.

Angularity, depth and color; the key elements for a great shot.

Not Matt's best work, but still nicely framed.

The direction of the road directs the viewer's eye while simultaneously giving the photo movement.

For his first shoot, I was very impressed with some of his shots. However, Matt, like myself, has a long way to go before becoming a No Viewfinder master.

Would you like you have your own No Viewfinder post? Come hang out with me for the day or e-mail me some photos.

Really unexciting, I know. I need to go take some more pictures. Though, I do think it's an interesting angle.

Tree in the Sky

Take out the buildings and I think it would look like a tree from an African savanna.

Fire Escapes

Whenever I pass an accessible fire escape, I always want to climb it. Maybe I've seen too many movies set in urban environments with distraught adolescents who find solace during the turbulent divorce of their parents in sitting on the rusty fire escape and thinking about how the other half lives. Or maybe I just like to climb things. I think it's more of the latter.

The Blurry Shot

Blurry shots. Artistic or lazy? This one was taken from the hip. I like the sense of motion in a static frame.

Group Self Portrait

The group self portrait is one of the most difficult no-look shots out there. With practice, however, it can be mastered. The trick is not make yourself the center of attention, which we all have natural tendencies to do, or to give away that its taken by someone in the photo. I believe this photo from today's white water rafting trip is a fine example of this acquired skill.

Houseman

At The Tabard, we have housemen and women who over see the physical plant and ensure it stays in good shape. Below, Steven Shin lays down the law, ensuring everyone gets their chores done. I can't wait until I have my own house and I get to keep it clean and paint the walls and buy furniture and dishes!

I like the natural soft blur that resulted from my shaky hand and Steven moving.

3 Webster Ave

Dartmouth is known for its academic excellence which is deeply rooted in tradition. The physical plants of Greek organizations house some of the college's richest tradition, not to mention architecture. With more than 60% of eligible students members in a fraternity, sorority or co-ed house, these houses are greatly admired and appreciated.

I am a member of a co-ed house, The Tabard, formally Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi became Sigma Epsilon Chi around 1960 after members and the Dartmouth community tired of associating itself with a house of white supremacists and bigots. The house affectionately calls itself The Tabard, referencing the place of rest from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Each term, the house is home to 20 or so students. Over the course of Dartmouth's existence, I wonder how many students have "almost" made it home and woke up to experience the authentic version of this photo.
